How World of Warcraft cured my shopping addiction

Where to start... I guess I should start by saying yes I do play World of Warcraft or WoW and so I guess by "Normal" Standards this makes me a nerd! I am a proud nerd, as most nerds are. But this Blog is not about how nerdy or how proud to be a nerd I am! This blog is about how playing World of Warcraft cured my shopping addiction.

1. The addiction to Shopping
2. World of Warcraft
3. The cure!

The addiction:
I love shopping. I buy things on sale just because they are on sale. If there is a bargain I buy it. If the tag reads % off. Its mine! I find myself buying things I will never need! I have a soap dispenser that I have owned for 2 years I have moved twice with this thing and it has yet to see soap, or the bathroom!!
Here is a list of things I have purchased over the past year that I either have still in the bag from the store or is in my closet untouched with no intentions of ever being used.

· 8 pairs of high heels = $80 spent- $150 Saved

(note I do not wear high heels)
· Pear scented reed diffuser= $5 spent- $9 saved
· Frog faced Buddha= $10 spent- $25 Saved
· Asian looking jewelry box =$5 spent- $10 saved
· Glowing balls on strings
· DVD’s I don’t even like or will never watch= cheap!!! (still in shrink wrap)
· Feather wine glass covers (really??? What was I thinking?)

Now that is just a small list of things I do NOT use.
Here is a list of things I have used once.

· Scrapbooking scissors
· Shoe rack (for my high heels I don’t wear)
· Pom pom maker
· Yarn for Pom Pom maker
· Lotions
· Perfumes
· 3 Zuzu pets ( yes three)
· Stickers loads and loads of stickers
· Containers to hold all of the crap I have collected over the years
(Still empty and sitting in the closet waiting to be used)

You get the picture!!

World of Warraft:
So I started playing WoW in September 2009. I never wanted to play. My friend Scott played and I have had many friends play over the years and I always teased them for being nerds. Then one day Scott told me about this game called Warhammer. I watched the trailers and game play online and my mind was set. I would be a sorcerer!!
My dreams were soon stomped on! Two major things happened.

1. I had no computer that could run this graphically catastrophic game.
2. My other friends were just starting to play WoW

(which my computer had no problem running)

So I knew what had to happen. Test out the often laughed upon World of Warcraft. I started by taking over an account owned by a friend of Scotts (Red flag #1 why did said friend not play anymore?? Was it that bad?) So I learned about the Relms and found the one my friends played on.
I decided to create a character. I looked at all of my options. What race and class that I wanted (mostly based on how cute I could make my new found hobby)
I asked lots of really dumb questions and bugged the hell out of Jesse, Jamie and Scott (thanks guys) and finally decided on a Mage Gnome. (red flag #2 I knew from this day forward I would always be the “short one” in game and in real life. Was this something I really wanted?) I had decided on a name that I knew no one else would have, Astrumsalice. She was perfect, cute little gnome with pink hair and an awesome personality. Next came the epic moment. I clicked her name and the mini movie began. I was so excited I don’t even remember what it was about!! I started the game! It was amazing.
At first I didn’t know what I was doing and I asked a lot of question and read a lot of forums about my class. I learned that I was a castor ( short for any class that casts spells) I found out mostly, thanks to Google about all the neat spells I could do. I had leveled her to 60 when I decided it was time. It was time to start my first alt. Was I ready? This was a huge commitment! But I did it. I started a Death Knight, a gnome of course. This decision started a chain reaction and I started another alt.
Currently I have 8 characters total.

1. Level 80 Gnome Mage
2. Level 80 Human Paladin
3. Level 60 Gnome Death Knight
4. Level 18 Night Elf Druid
5. Level 17 Dwarf Hunter
6. Level 12 Draenei Priest
7. Level 11 Human warrior
8. Level 10 Undead Mage( yes I even have a Horde Character)

The Cure:
So some people are going to say that it is silly to fix a problem with another problem! Well I find this to be false. I found that when I picked up WoW, I no longer had time to go shopping. I no longer needed to fill my closet with things I would never use or see again (until I moved or got bored) I found that I saved money, hundreds of dollars a month by going home and sitting at my computer, instead of going shopping after work.
Now don’t get me wrong I still enjoy going out with the girls on shopping trips. But I don’t just end up at stores walking around the isles looking for things to purchase. I know some of you are rolling your eyes and thinking that I am just justifying my WoW addiction (which isn’t an addiction I can stop at any time! Hehe, I just choose not to) Spending a mere $15 dollars a month has saved me from hundreds of dollars and countless hours in shopping centers! Now I know there is the talk of you will not meet people or you will never get a guy/girl but none of that is true! You just have to find what works with your life. I have never missed a Birthday party or a family BBQ. I never call in sick to work or miss a party on a Friday night because I was raiding. I guess what I am saying is that WoW filled a void I was filling with shopping and spending money. So thank you World of Warcraft for saving my savings from myself!!

FOR THE ALLIANCE!!!
